SORC

Solo Classes

SORC Class 1
Class 1 includes yachts with IRC ratings from 1.030 and upwards. In 2011 this includes our Director of Racings’ Achambault 35 - Solan Goose of Hamble, X37, Beneteau First 40.7, J122’s – Jbellino, Oojah and Mint Julip, a one off Stewart 37 – Ding Dong and at the top of the ratings a modified Figaro 2 – Rare. Winners from this class and Overall IRC during recent years include A35, X37, 40.7, Stewart 37, J122’s.
SORC Class 2
Class 2 has the narrowest IRC rating band and covers yachts between 1.000 and 1.029 – this includes Sunfast 3200’s, J105’s, HOD 35, JOD 35, a Dehler 36. This middle class is often the most competitive and J105’s, HOD’s and JOD’s have all been on the top of the Overall podium, it is only a matter of time before a Sunfast 3200 wins too.
SORC Class 3
Class 3 has the widest IRC band, recent entries have started at a Sonata rating 0.810 through the very competitive GK29 and Contessa 26, a Beneteau First 32, Mustang 30, Southerly 110, Sigma 33,36 & 38, Maxi 1050, Elan 333, Elan 340, Figaro 1, Beneteau 31.7’s, J110, J92s up to Wee Bear a beautifully modified Projection 920. Again many of these boats can win given their optimal conditions, in recent years the Beneteau First 32, Mustang 30, Beneteau 31.7, Sigma 36, Elan 333, J92s and Figaro 1 have all won races in class and Overall under IRC.

The  French Solo Classes dominate the single handed racing scene thanks to innovative management and enthusiastic class structures, by every measure they dwarf the UK activity.

Number of active skippers: 400 +
Boats racing: 400+
Boats built: 30 per annum
Solo Miles raced?
Design offices staff employed...
Sailmakers, riggers, builders, prep teams.
Sponsors spend.

The key to this success lies in the exciting modern designs of the boats, fast planing hulls with moveable ballast and innovative sail plans, competing in strict one design races with well funded teams. The courses sailed are a mixture of short and long  highly testing events.

Ambitious young skippers can follow a well marked career path from Mini to Figaro and on to class 40 over many years of exciting racing in fast boats.

In contrast the mixed handicap racing model favoured in the UK has limited prospects since old heavy displacement boats can win on corrected time and there is no incentive for design or development. Here is a full list of all the exciting designs that have been built and are racing in the UK since 2000.............er ? to the nearest ten ? Nil.
